Tim Montgomerie in the Times, 18 July, reviewing Something will turn up – Britain’s economy past, present and future, by David Smith:
Smith… reminds us of how intransigent [Margaret] Thatcher often was with her colleagues. “I haven’t got much time”, she once told her Chancellor Nigel Lawson in 1987, “only time to explode and get my way”. On another occasion in 1985 she gathered her key ministers to discuss whether Britain should join Europe’s Exchange Rate Mechanism. The discussion did not go her way. Isolated, she channelled Abraham Lincoln with her conclusion to the meeting: “Ayes seven, noes one, the noes have it”.
